Cataracts

What are Cataracts?

Cataracts cause cloudy areas to develop in the lens of your eye, leading to blurry or hazy vision. They typically form slowly over many years and affect over 50% of people by age 80. Cataracts make it difficult to read, drive, see faces, and complete daily tasks. Our ophthalmologist, Dr. Dodds, can check for cataracts during a routine eye exam and suggest the necessary treatment.

What Causes Cataracts?

There are several factors that causes cataracts, such as the following:

•           Aging

•           UV radiation

•           Diabetes

•           Certain medications

•           Family history

•           Smoking

•           Injuries

•           Previous eye surgeries

When Is Surgery Necessary?

In the early stages, cataracts are typically monitored during annual eye exams to track their progression. However, when cataracts begin to significantly impact your vision and daily activities, surgery may be recommended. The procedure is quick and effective, often taking less than 30 minutes.

What to Expect During Cataract Surgery

Dr. Dodds will numb your eye with anesthetic drops, and in some cases, a local injection may be used. A tiny incision will then be made to break up the cataract using ultrasound waves, and the fragments will be suctioned out. The cloudy lens will be replaced with a clear artificial lens to restore your vision.
